PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has urged the Zambia National Building Society (ZNBS) to expand initiatives aimed at enabling Zambians to access affordable housing not only in Lusaka but also other parts of the country.
And the head of State has warned that Government will not condone sub-standard works by local contractors because doing so compromises quality.
The President wants ZNBS to complement Government’s decentralisation agenda by ensuring that people beyond the line of rail have access to affordable homes because “Lusaka is not Zambia”.
“We want citizens to aspire to live in Kasama and enjoy a global standard apartment – gated home,” he said.
“We would like to see Zambia National Building Society to leapfrog to gated property, gated homes, which some of our citizens are admiring in South Africa.”
The President was speaking yesterday when he launched the ZNBS head office building in Lusaka’s Rhodes Park.
Mr Hichilema urged ZNBS, whose mandate is to mobilise financial resources and invest in mortgage financing to increase housing stock, to provide affordable housing beyond Lusaka.
He said doing so will fit into Government’s vision and decentralisation agenda and help provide affordable and decent housing, which is a basic necessity.
