THE Mulenga brothers Chongo and Kalombo won a second medal for Zambia on Sunday after settling for silver in the men’s doubles category at the All-Africa Senior Badminton Championship in Botswana.
The duo put up a spirited performance but it was not good enough to upstage Koceila Mammeri and Sabri Medel of Algeria who minted gold with two straight wins at Royal Aria Sports Arena in Gaborone.
It was a match of high intensity but in the end, Chongo and Kalombo lost 21-16, 21-19 against the Algerians, who are rated among the most experienced players in Africa.
Zambia won bronze in the team event.
Chongo and Kalombo qualified for the semi-finals after outclassing Jean Marie and Pascal Norim of Ghana.
They won 21-6, 21-11 to book their place in the final.
National badminton team coach Donald Mabo is happy with the way the Zambian players have performed at the continental championship.
Mabo said in an interview from Gaborone yesterday that the players performed well.
“The players have performed well. First we won bronze in the team event. We also had
Mary Chilambe and Chongo Mulenga beating the Egyptians in the mixed doubles. Overall, I have seen some improvements, I feel with all the support we can even do better,” he said.
Mabo said all the players accounted for themselves well despite stiff competition…https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
