THE Zambia Boxing Federation (ZBF) has regretted the dismissal of boxer Stephen Zimba from the Zambia Army and is planning to arrange rehabilitation for the Commonwealth Games silver medallist.
On Sunday, Zambia Army spokesperson Colonel Sydney Mwewa announced the dismissal of lance corporal Zimba on disciplinary grounds.
Mwewa said Zimba, also known as ‘Bimba Mawele’ on social media, was dismissed on January 16, 2026.
ZBF general secretary Humphrey Kasosolwa, who described the development as sad, said they will engage the National Sports Council of Zambia and Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts to arrange for rehabilitation for Zimba.
“It is quite sad that it has reached to this extent of him (Zimba) losing employment. We will approach the Sports Council and the ministry to see if we can arrange a rehabilitation for him.
He is still young,” Kasosolwa said in an interview yesterday.
He regretted that Zambia has lost a quality boxer.
“He (Zimba) is a very good boxer and was very promising.
We need to sit him down and counsel him,” Kasosolwa said.
He advised other athletes to learn from what has happened to Zimba.
“This is a lesson to others. Sport, especially boxing, is about discipline. If you are not disciplined you can’t make it. We are hoping that others have learnt lessons and will not be caught up in similar circumstances,” Kasosolwa said.
Zimba was seen in videos posted on his Facebook page under the name ‘Bimba Mawele’ singing with his friends while clad in military attire.
Zimba won silver at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games after defeating Loan Croft from Wales.
