Increase in defilement cases irks NPA

THE National Prosecutions Authority (NPA) has expressed concern over the increase in the number of child sexual abuse cases in the country, especially incidents of incest.

NPA public relations officer Chali Hambayi said in an interview that the trend is worrying, as more children are being sexually violated by those who are meant to protect them.

“From the cases that the NPA prosecutes, the perpetrator is often someone known to the child; we are seeing patterns of grooming and luring of children by manipulative perpetrators,” Ms Hambayi said.

She said there are several underlying factors contributing to the rise in sexual abuse against children, including patriarchal norms and unequal power relations that perpetuate the subordination of women and girls to men, creating toxic cycles of violence.
