GOVERNMENT has raised concerns about escalating poaching levels, uncontrolled fires and overfishing in the Kafue Flats, one of Zambia’s most important ecological sites, which is also a water resource for Lusaka.

Minister of Tourism Rodney Sikumba, who visited the district last week, cautioned government workers against involvement in illegal activities.

“I am particularly worried about reports of increased poaching on the Kafue Flats, continuing fires and uncontrolled fishing,” he said.

“I am quick to reach out to our cooperating partners to help us, but I also want to demand the best of all government workers and caution against involvement in illegal activities.”

Mr Sikumba urged traditional leaders and members of the community to help protect the 6,500-square-kilometre floodplains, which house the Blue Lagoon and Lochinvar national parks.

Speaking at the same event, Chief Shakumbila of the Sala people urged Government to improve the conditions of service for wildlife rangers.

He said there is a need to tackle the root cause of the vice, which he alleged is being facilitated by the officers.
