MINISTER of Mines and Minerals Development Paul Kabuswe has urged mining companies to share their expertise in occupational safety standards with small-scale mining cooperatives.
Speaking at the inter-company first aid competition hosted by Mopani Copper Mines at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe, Mr Kabuswe said there is need for established mining firms to extend their knowledge to small cooperatives to reduce illegal mining activities and prevent loss of life among young miners.
He also encouraged mining companies to invest in technologyenabled safety solutions such as telemedicine and remote consultations to provide expert medical guidance in real time.
Mr Kabuswe stated that the Government is committed to supporting youth participation in the mining sector through their cooperatives, but wants their operations to be formalised and conducted in an orderly manner.
“As a Government, we are very committed to empower the youths to participate in the mining industry, but we are concerned [about] the continued illegal mining activities being undertaken because it is leading to loss of lives of many, and so I want you as mining companies, since you are already established, to offer lessons to these small cooperatives by teaching them occupational safety standards needed in the sector,” he said….https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
