Africa’s mineral wealth must benefit citizens – HH

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has called for Africa to transition from extractive economies to transformative ones, where minerals drive industrialisation, innovation and human development.
He questioned whether current mining laws are fit for the future, emphasising the need for value chains that benefit citizens, protect the ecosystem, and safeguard rights for future generations.
“Globally, the extractive industries have played a significant role in the global economy in recent years despite growing environmental and social scrutiny.
“Several benefits have been observed at international level such as economic growth through revenue generation, employment and skills generation, infrastructure and technological advancements, foreign direct investments and a global supply chain,” President Hichilema said.
The President, represented by Minister of Mines and Minerals Development Paul Kabuswe, stressed the need for Africa to harness its mineral resources to drive development and prosperity.
