Don’t follow my footsteps, Mutubila urges young couples

VETERAN broadcaster Frank Mutubila has advised young couples not to follow his footsteps on marital issues but be gentle with one another.

Mr Mutubila, who is Zambia’s former ambassador to Italy, was speaking at the wedding reception of Bwembya Kafita and Dolly Kanonkela in Lusaka yesterday.

He started his flowery narration with a hint on his failed marriage, revealing he’d been divorced twice.

“I have been married twice and I lost both marriages. Not suddenly but slowly. Through silence. Through pride. Through the foolish belief that love could wait while I chased the world,” he said.

He said he first married when he was only 22 but that the marriage ended in peaceful divorce. “But peace does not mean pain was absent.

“She stayed in England for the sake of our son. I returned home,” he said.

Mr Mutubila said there are years he does not remember in the life of his 50-year-old son because “I wasn’t there”.

“And there are years of mine he doesn’t know because I never let him in,” he said.

He added that his second marriage was more complicated as it was born out of admiration for a woman’s beauty and glamour, instead of learning her.
