PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema is saddened over the tragic deaths of four family members who drowned in the Kafulafuta Dam, and has donated K50,000 to support the bereaved clan.
People of Shilashi village in Masaiti District and surrounding areas yesterday gathered in numbers to mourn the victims, who were put to rest at Membe cemetery in Shilashi.
The victims were attempting to cross the dam on Friday in the night when a dugout canoe capsized, resulting in the calamity.
The victims are Lotson Kandala, 30, his wife Melody Mambwe, 26, their fiveyear-old daughter, Orient Kandala, and a two-month-old baby boy.
During burial yesterday, Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo delivered a message of condolences to the family on behalf of President Hichilema.
Mr Matambo said the head of State regrets the unfortunate incident, hence this gesture.
“We urge the family to remain united, and trust God to comfort you. We also express our gratitude to all community members, the Fire Brigade officers, among others, who worked hard to ensure all the four bodies are retrieved,” he said.
