Zambia, EU pen €110m education agreements

ZAMBIA has signed two financing agreements with European Union (EU) amounting to €110 million to improve access, quality, equity and inclusiveness in primary and secondary education.Minister of Education Douglas Syakalima signed on behalf of Zambia while EU commissioner for international partnership Jutta Urpilainen signed for EU in Brussels at the Global Gateway high-level event on education.
The two agreements include financing for social reforms – amounting to €60 million budget support programme.
The other agreement is on equal chances for human development amounting to €50 million, which is aimed at holistically improving early childhood education and development, with focus on Luapula and North-Western provinces.
This is according to a statement issued yesterday by Hambaya Munang’andu, first secretary for press at the Zambian Embassy in Brussels, Belgium.
Earlier in a panel discussion, Mr Syakalima said the New Dawn administration realises that without investing in free education, a country cannot produce competitive citizens in future.
