Don’t stay forfeiture proceedings against Esther Lungu, Court of Appeal urged

THE State has urged the Court of Appeal not to stay the forfeiture proceedings against former First Lady Esther Lungu as she desires.
Deputy chief state advocate Margaret Chitundu wants the appellant court to maintain the Economic and Financial Crimes Court (EFCC)’s ruling refusing to stay proceedings against Mrs Lungu.
“Staying the proceedings in the EFCC is merely going to delay proceedings in the case before that court.
“The matter before the EFCC must proceed speedily,” Ms Chitundu submitted yesterday.
This is in a matter the EFCC halted proceedings in a case the Director of Public Prosecutions wants to have Mrs Lungu’s 15 flats in Ibex Hill forfeited to the State.
The EFCC halted proceedings after the Court of Appeal ordered it to do so following Mrs Lungu’s appeal against the fast-track court’s decision to dismiss her application to crossexamine a witness from the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC).
In the appeal before the Court of Appeal, Mrs Lungu is also challenging the EFCC’s decision to dismiss another application for it to refer the forfeiture proceedings case to the Constitutional Court for determination…https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/
