HH congratulates ‘brother’ Gething

PRESIDENT Hakainde Hichilema has congratulated Zambia-born Vaughan Gething on his election as First Minister of Wales.
Mr Gething, the first Black politician to lead a European country, was yesterday elected First Minister after winning 27 of the 51 votes cast in Senedd, the Welsh Assembly.
In a historic result, Mr Gething over the weekend won the Welsh Labour leadership election, setting the stage for him to become Wales’ first black First Minister.
“Congratulations to the new First Minister of Wales, born in Zambia, Vaughan Gething, on your election to the highest office in your country,” President Hichilema wrote online in a message that included some Welsh.
“We look forward to enhancing bilateral relations between Zambia and the UK. Longyfarchiadau ar eich swydd newydd, da iawn [Congratulations on the new job].”
Mr Gething was born in Zambia in 1974, where his father, a Welsh vet from Ogmore-by-Sea in Glamorgan, met his mother, a chicken farmer running a smallholding.
As a young man, the trained solicitor and father-of-one saw disparate futures for himself in law, cricket and singing, according to profiles published in the UK dailies.
