Govt launches irrigated maize project

TO CATER for the likely shortage of the staple crop in the country due to poor rainfall, Government has launched a maize irrigation project on about 300 hectares of land in TezhiTezhi district.
And Chief Chikanza Munyama, of the Ila-speaking people, says he expects to have his first harvest from irrigated crops in July and October this year.
Launching the project, Southern Province Minister Credo Nanjuwa says President Hakainde Hichilema’s declaration of an emergency food disaster calls for a multi-sectoral approach to re-align all district activities and available resources to capitalise on food production.
“We have a dire situation in the country in terms of food and this province, including Itezhi-Tezhi, [has] not been spared, [hence] the President expects us, his appointees, to provide solutions to this challenge by proactively turning it into opportunities and explore possibilities of winter maize growing,” he said…https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
