ZIMBA Mission Hospital attends to 10 cases of prostate enlargement every week.
The hospital’s medical officer in charge, Paul Katende, said it has operated on six people this year while two others could not undergo operations because their cases are deemed cancerous following histologic examinations.
“We see more than 10
elderly male patients in a week who are in severe pain and are unable to pass urine due to prostate enlargement and require emergency medical care. We have a lot of elderly men here with the problem of enlarged prostates and most of them are in pain,” Dr Katende said in an interview.
He said the hospital recently operated on an 82-year-old man who had renal failure which resulted in him failing to pass urine.
“Livingstone and Zimba districts lack urologists and, therefore, general surgeons have been tasked to attend to urinary tract diseases,” he said.
Dr Katende said Southern Province has very few hospitals that conduct urinary tract operations.
“Prostate enlargement is common in men 40 years and above. People believe that having a lot of wives causes prostate enlargement while others attribute it to fewer sexual encounters [less than two rounds in a month].
He, however, said these beliefs cannot be substantiated…https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
