Magistrate Idah Phiri rebuked the politician for his “reckless and careless actions” before passing the verdict yesterday.
“I sentence the accused to pay a fine of K20,000, in default, to serve a sentence of nine months imprisonment with hard labour,” the court ruled after considering that the offence is a misdemeanour.
Earlier, the convict, through a lawyer, pleaded for mercy in mitigation.
“The court should exercise maximum leniency as he is a first offender. He is a father and a husband, breadwinner of his family. In sentencing, his incarceration shall weigh heavily on the livelihood of his family,” the lawyer submitted.
It was alleged that Tayali, on October 1, 2022 in Lusaka, assaulted constable Melody Malama during the execution of her duties when his wife took food to him while in detention.
Meanwhile, Lusaka magistrate Tevor Kasanda issued a bench warrant against Patriotic Front (PF) chairperson for information and publicity Emmanuel Mwamba for missing court in a case he is also accused of assaulting a police officer…https://enews.daily-mail.co.zm/welcome/home
