RALLY driver Leroy Gomes on Saturday won the 2023 sportsman-of-the-year award under the umbrella of the Zambian-Man-of-the-Year Awards.

Gomes beat three other sports personalities staged at Ciela Resort. These are 400 metres runner Muzala Samukonga, who won gold at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and national football team players Fashion Sakala and Kings Kangwa.

The Zambian-Man-of-the[1]Year Awards recognises men who have scored success in their respective fields. Gomes has been recognised after winning the 2022 Africa Rally Championship (ARC).

Gomes, who is also Zambia Motor Sport Association vice-president – motor sport, is grateful for the recognition.

“Thank you so much to everyone who voted for me to win this award. I would not be named sportsman-of-the- year 2023 without you all! I am truly humbled,” he said.

Gomes also thanked his supporters for being there for him.

“And finally a huge thank you to all the fans and my service crew. We can only shine as much as you allow us to shine! For your support I am humbled beyond words,” he said.
