15 boys ‘slashed’

FIFTEEN teenagers of Lusaka were on Saturday rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) after undergoing traditional circumcision which left two of them excessively bleeding. The Muslim boys were rushed to hospital after police stopped the initiation ceremony after members of the public raised alarm.
The circumcision, which is part of the Muslim tradition, was being conducted in a temporary pole and grass fence near the railway line between Chawama and Kamwala South townships.
UTH public relations officer Natalie Nashikolo said in an interview yesterday that the children were rushed to hospital after police in Chawama called for an ambulance.
