ZJA picks 18 for international events

THE Zambia Judo Association (ZJA) has selected the final 18-member squad to represent the country at various international tournaments this year.
ZJA technical director Francis Linosi, who released the names in Lusaka yesterday, said the team comprises nine senior and nine junior judokas.
Linosi said the team will start preparations this week.
The senior team is preparing for the African Union Sports Council Region Five tournament in Swaziland while the junior team will compete at the World and Africa Junior Championships slated for South Africa and United Arab Emirates.
“The onus is on them [judokas]. They need to prove why they have been picked in the final team. Otherwise, as the technical bench we have done our best and picked the best judokas. They all competed in the trials and our selection was on merit,” Linosi said.
The senior men’s team has Micheal Mwabi (60kg), Steven Mungánda (66kg), Amos Sikazwe (73kg) and John Mwale (81kg).
Abigail Chindele (48kg) and Esther Sandu (52kg) will compete in the women category.
Reserves are Edward Kamwandi (90kg), Davies Simbeya (100kg) and Agida Phiri (+100kg).
The junior boys’ team has Joshua Nyondo (60kg), David Chisenga (66kg), Mwango Mwale (73kg) and Jonathan Mulyunda (81kg) while the girls’ team has Mary Kanyemba (48kg), Florence Mupeta (52kg), Naomi Zungu (63kg), Lestina Syapeya (70kg) and Wendy Mwaba (78kg).
