ZICA warns fake accountants

THE Zambia Institute of Chartered Accountants (ZICA) has warned members of the public against masquerading as accountants as they risk being prosecuted.
ZICA chief executive officer Hapenga Kabeta said the law will take its course not only on people with fake accountancy qualifications but those with qualifications that are not registered under the accountant’s act of 2008.
“The accountant’s act of 2008 stipulates that any individual in Zambia who is not a member of ZICA cannot practice as an accountant or be called an accountant.
Section 12 (1) of the act states that “A person who intends to be employed or to practice as an accountant in Zambia will apply to the institute for registration in the prescribed manner and form upon payment of the prescribed fee”,” Mr Kabeta said.
He appealed to employers to ensure they engage registered accountants.
The institute’s sentiments come in the wake of the Lusaka High Court’s decision to uphold the 12 months sentence imposed on Mumfumbwe member of Parliament Steven Masumba by the magistrate’s court for using a fraudulent accounting diploma to obtain employment.
Mr Kabeta said the institute welcomes the High Court’s decision to uphold Mr Masumba’s conviction.
