ROBINSON KUNDA, Lusaka
ZESCO United’s quest to reclaim the top slot on the MTN Super Division log today faces a stern test when they face unpredictable City of Lusaka in a Week Seven encounter at Woodlands Stadium.
The Ndola side are third on the standings with 11 points, three behind leaders Lumwana Radiants.
Victory will push Zesco to the summit because they have a better goal aggregate than the North-Western Province outfit.
Zesco have netted 11 times and conceded six while Lumwana have scored eight and allowed two.
The Ndola side will use the match to prepare for next Wednesday’s Confederation Cup group stage match against Sudanese side Al Hilal Obied.
Coach Zlatic Krmpotic will assemble his best 11 to end a poor record against City.
Zesco last beat City at Woodlands Stadium in 2007 – a 2-0 win courtesy of Jonas Sakuwaha’s brace.
In 2008 City edged Zesco 1-0, the teams drew 0-0 in 2009 and ‘Yamoto’ overcame the Ndola side 1-0 in 2010.
Krmpotic will be hoping to open a new chapter today.
He will keep faith in skipper Jacob Banda in goal, with Dauti Musekwa, Fackson Kapumbu, David Odhiambo and Ben Banh keeping vigil on City strikers.
Kondwani Mtonga, Anthony Akumu, John Ching’andu and Dave Daka will be stinging passes in midfield as Zesco are seeking to halt a three match winless streak in the league.
The responsibility of getting goals will be for Idris Mbombo and Jesse Were, who scored in last Saturday’s 1-0 win over Egyptian side Smouha in the Confederation Cup Group C match in Ndola.
But City, who lost 1-0 to Nkana last Sunday, will be looking to register the first win at home.
City coach Elijah Chikwanda will rely on star striker Dominic Mulenshi and Roy Sakwanda for victory while Edward Chimfwembe will anchor the defence with Jack Musonda coordinating play in the midfield.
