MULWANDA LUPIYA, Levy Mwanawasa Stadium, Ndola
ZESCO 1 ZANACO 2
CONFEDERATION Cup flag-carriers Zanaco yesterday came from behind to beat Champions League envoys Zesco United in a four-club international tournament match played before a small crowd.
After a barren first half that was evenly contested, Zesco shook the net on 51 minutes through Kenya midfielder Jesse Were.
Were sent goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata in the wrong direction from a spot-kick.
The penalty was awarded after Aaron Katebe and Lee Ngoma hacked striker Idris Mbombo.
The decision to award the penalty did not go well with Zanaco players, who protested to referee Stanley Hachiwa but the whistleman stood his ground.
Zanaco pressed and got the equaliser in the 64th minute.
Midfielder Roderick Kabwe blasted in a free-kick beating goalkeeper Lameck Nyangu.
Ivorian defender Ben Adama Banh’s header smashed the cross-bar from Maybin Mwaba’s free kick in the 74th minute.
A minute later, Zanaco coach Mumamba Numba introduced Saith Sakala for Dave Daka, and the striker got the clincher on 80 minutes.
In a quick counter-attack, Aubrey Funga released the ball to Augustine Mulenga.
Mulenga crossed for Sakala to score.
Zanaco battered Zesco 4-0 in a Super Division Week 29 match at the same venue on October 31, 2015.
AZAM 3 CHICKEN INN 1
At the same venue, Tanzanian side Azam came from behind to trounce Zimbabwean outfit Chicken Inn in an early kick-off.
Chicken Inn made a false start taking the lead on 27 minutes through Nickie Muchadeyi’s spectacular volley.
Canaan Nkomo provided the pass.
Four minutes later, Azam were level. Midfielder Ame Ali found skipper John Bocco, who placed the ball between the legs of goalkeeper Pride Zendera.
The Tanzanian Confederation Cup envoys made it 2-1 in the 53rd minute when substitute Kipre Tchetche scored from a penalty.
Zendera hacked Tchetche and referee Audrick Nkole pointed to the spot.
Chicken Inn midfielder Brian Juru headed into his net in an effort to clear a Ranadhan Singano corner in the 68th minute.
Mitchell Katswai blasted his shot from a free-kick into the cross-bar in the 72nd minute for the Zimbabwean Champions League representatives to lose 3-1.
Azam are top with four points at par with Zanaco but the former have a better goal aggregate while Chicken Inn and Zesco have a point apiece.
The tournament ends on Wednesday with Zesco facing Chicken Inn and Zanaco taking on Azam.
