THE sound of heavy artillery reverberated across the lush forested area in the Central African Republic (CAR), as ground troops backed by three armoured United Nations (UN) vehicles fired 75mm anti-tank and 12.7mm anti-air guns at rebel targets about a kilometre away.
The objective was to capture the rebel leader. The battle only lasted about 40 minutes, ending with two big explosions on enemy targets.
But all this was just a rehearsal to showcase the preparedness of the Zambian battalion about to be deployed to CAR.
The mock battle took place at Nanking Training Base, popularly known as Mikango Barracks, east of Lusaka.
Watching the rehearsal was Staff Sergeant Queen Ngoma. In a few months, she might witness this battle in reality.http://epaper.daily-mail.co.zm/
