ZAMBIAN clubs in the Confederation of African Football inter-clubs competitions have suffered a reality check.
Green Buffaloes were the first to bid farewell to the Confederation Cup after losing 5-2 to Al Masry of Egypt in the preliminary round.
Zanaco and Zesco United, our representatives in the CAF Champions League, gave us hope after eliminating Gambian and Zanazibari opponents.
However, the outlook changed on Wednesday when Zesco’s unbeaten run in the CAF Champions League was ended by ASEC Mimosas who edged them 1-0 at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola, while Zanaco lost 2-1 to Mbabane Swallows of Swaziland at Nkoloma Stadium.
The losses by Zanaco and Zesco came hardly 24 hours after Nkana were humbled 3-0 away at CR Belouizdad.
These results are telling us something: we have to change the cycle of our league calendar to the European format, otherwise our clubs will continue playing second fiddle on the continent.
Despite this, our clubs can rebound.
