Zambia ups wheat output

ZAMBIA has recorded an increase in wheat production in the 2013/14 season with 338,000 tonnes from 266,000 tonnes the previous season due to less stress on the crop, Zambia National Farmers’ Union (ZNFU) says.
ZNFU, however, says that despite registering over 70,000 tonnes increase in wheat output and other interventions, the area cultivated reduced in the year under review.
This is contained in the union’s publication, ZNFU agro watch availed to the Daily Mail on Wednesday.
“Zambia’s 2014 wheat production figure has been pegged at 338,233 metric tonnes from 266,000 metric tonnes,” the statement reads.
ZNFU indicates that there was a 5.5 percent drop in the area planted in comparison to last year.
The country’s wheat consumption is estimated at 233,000 metric tonnes.
Zambia’s wheat production has been growing over the last few years as follows: 2010/11 production was 172,000 metric tonnes, while 2011/12 production was 237,000 metric tonnes.
Reviewing the barley and sugarcane production, the union notes that estimated areas under the respective crops are 1,044 and 35,202 hectares.
