Zambia Sugar Open organisers target $500,000

DIANA MUTAKAFIMBO, Lusaka
THE Zambia Sugar Open Organising Committee (ZSOOC) is targeting to raise US$500,000 for this year’s event scheduled for April 21 to 24 at Lusaka Golf Club.
This year’s event is the third of the US$750,000-rich Zambia Sugar Plc-sponsored event.
ZSOOC chairperson for media and publicity Nsama Mataka said in Lusaka on Friday that the prize money for this year’s event has been pegged at R1.5 million.
“Zambia Sugar covers much of this cost with the rest of the money coming in from the corporate world. The committee has very exciting packages on offer to various institutions. The traditional corporate marquee sponsored by Rooney’s annually provides the highest networking platform as well as the best viewing position,” Mataka said.
Over 144 local and international golfers with the majority being the South African legion of professionals are expected to challenge for honours.
Leading the onslaught from the Zambian contingent is South Africa-based Madalitso Muthiya, who played in the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot.
Mataka said Lusaka Golf Club has undergone remarkable infrastructure improvements with the most notable being the course which is in a perfect condition.
He said Sunshine Tour director Gary Todd is expected in the country to inspect the club next month.
“The PAR 3 challenge on all four short holes will add much pressure on the players as they all seek a first hole in one to walk away with a brand new car. DStv will provide coverage for the duration of the tournament and this will be played repeatedly for seven days. This will also be available on catch-up to all premium bouquet subscribers,” he said.
Defending champion Vaughn Groenwald of South Africa is also expected to compete.
