Zambia Sugar commissions K500m refinery plant

ZAMBIA Sugar Plc has partially commissioned the K500 million Refinery that is expected to more than double sugar production to 90,000 from 40,000 tonnes annually once fully commissioned.
Zambia Sugar Plc managing director Rebecca Katowa said at shareholders’ open day on Friday that once fully commissioned next month, the refinery will position the company as Africa’s single largest sugar producer.
“We have partially commissioned the refinery that will enable us enhance our product mix and increase our capacity to improve the quality of sugar,”she said.
Mrs Katowa told shareholders that the development will also increase its exports to the Great Lakes region and other markets within Africa.
She also said the financial year ended March was characterised by among other challenges, low cane production and cane disease due to low water levels in the Kafue River, power outages, and the depreciation of the Kwacha against major convertibles.
Mrs Katowa however said prudent management of the company cushioned the impact.
