Zambia needs state-owned construction company

Dear editor,
LOOKING at the over 80 percent of infrastructure contracts that are given to foreign companies in Zambia every year, on the basis that Zambia doesn’t have companies with capacity to take on these big projects.

Why can’t Zambia come up with a state-owned construction company that can start competing with these foreign companies?
Mind you, in 2017, Zambia signed projects worth over US$5 billion with mostly foreign companies. Out of all that money, more than 50 percent will be externalised to other countries as salaries for the foreign workers, profits and procurement of materials and equipment.
