ZAMBIA 50 UGANDA 67
ZAMBIA on Thursday lost to eventual winners Uganda at the Africa Netball Championship to settle for third position.
Hosts Uganda finished with 10 points, two better than second-placed Malawi while Zambia were third on six points.
Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe are the other countries that competed at the weeklong tournament at Lugogo Indoor Arena in Kampala.
Zambia beat Botswana 52-47 in the opening match and went on to edge Namibia 56-46.
The Zambian queens lost 51-45 to Malawi and 59-58 to Zimbabwe.
Netball Association of Zambia president Gertrude Mukumi confirmed the results in an interview in Lusaka yesterday.
“The tournament was fantastic despite a few challenges we faced before and during the tournament. We are happy that at least after competing in that tournament, we are assured of being ranked, which is very important,” Mukumi said.
She commended companies that facilitated towards the team’s trip.
“We have shifted our focus to another international competition which will be held in September in Namibia. We are also preparing for the 2018 World Cup to be held in England.
“We will keep knocking on the doors of our sponsors because without them, we cannot go anywhere,” Mukumi said.
