ZAAA hails Mupopo

ZAMBIA Amateur Athletics Association (ZAAA) president Elias Mpondela has commended sprinter Kabange Mupopo for winning a gold medal at the All- Africa Games in Congo Brazzaville.
Mpondela said in an interview in Lusaka yesterday that Mupopo’s performance in the 400m race was exceptional.
“As ZAAA we are extremely excited with the performance of Kabange. I am happy that our strategic plan system has started producing results. We are delivering good results.
“Our athletes have performed extremely well at the All-Africa Games despite camping them within the country. There [athletes] performance is impressive,” Mpondela said.
Mupopo clocked 50:22 seconds to mint gold in the 400m race ahead of Nigeria’s Okon George, who timed 50.77 seconds to settle for a silver medal.
He appealed to Government to invest in the sport.
He also expressed confidence that other runners will reap medals in their respective categories.
“The money we make from the ICR [Inter Company Relay] goes towards investment. I am appealing to Government to help us [ZAAA] invest in athletics if not all sports disciplines,” he said.
Zambia has so far bagged two medals at the ongoing All-Africa Games, with boxer Ben Muziyo winning bronze.
