Workers call for peaceful campaigns

THE Civil Servants and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (CSAWU) has implored political parties to campaign peacefully ahead of the January 20, presidential election.
CSAWUZ president David Chiyombe said politicians should ensure their campaigns are truthful and issued-based.
“This is our country and we should show each other love regardless of political affiliation. Politicians should know that violence is a recipe for anarchy,” Mr Chiyombe said.
Mr Chiyombe said this on Friday last week during a CSAWUZ Central Province conference.
The conference was held under the theme ‘Revitalising trade union organisation through grassroots unionism’.
Mr Chiyombe said campaigns should be based on issues affecting the nation and they should offer solutions.
“In the civil service, there are a number of issues that need to be addressed. There is an issue regarding the nurses who were fired and the controversial wage freeze. These are some of the issues which need to be addressed,” Mr Chiyombe said.
He said the union will support any candidate who is ready to address the challenges faced by the masses.
“We have the power and we have this opportunity to vote for a candidate who is ready to address the challenges we are facing,” he said.
Mr Chiyombe said “politicians should know that it is not about their wellbeing but the welfare of the Zambian people”.
