TEACHERS in Muchinga Province are worried about escalating cases of child marriages and pregnancies in the region and have called for urgent measures to address the situation.
Zambia Teachers Forum Muchinga Province Chapter director Benny Chishatama said in a statement yesterday that there is need for parents to work with other stakeholders such as teachers and traditional leaders to end child marriages and pregnancies to secure the girls’ future.
“The rate at which early marriages and pregnancies are happening in the province and the nation as a whole is very alarming. Reports that there were 15,000 girls who dropped out of school in 2016 are worrying,” he said.
Mr Chishatama said education is a right which every child should enjoy and called for measures to be put in place to ensure that parents and guardians who prevent girls from getting educated are dealt with.
