THE Zambia Weights and Measures Agency (ZW&MA) says it will sensitise more people on the use of correct and certified measuring equipment.
This is in order to enhance consumer protection in the country.
ZW&MA administration director Adrin Chimboni says consumers need to be protected, adding that the agency will not sit down and watch traders and manufacturers exploit consumers.
Ms Chimboni said this during ZW&MA’s sensitisation tour at Chawama Clinic on International Women’s Day. The agency sensitised women and men in the council wards on the use of the certified scales by traders on the local markets.
“We will make sure we sensitise the public on the use of the correct and certified measuring equipments to ensure that consumers are protected.
We want consumers to be aware that they have all the rights to report to our agency if they realise or notice that the measuring scales that some traders are using are not certified,” she said.
The agency also donated assorted goods that are measured using certified equipment as a way to enlighten the patients on the products that require correct measuring equipment.
Among the issues that were donated include, sugar, salt, cooking oil, soya chunks, rice, and undiluted drinks to all the patients in the wards they visited.
Ms Chimboni said women should also be encouraged to understand the importance of the certified measuring equipment to enhance consumer protection in the country.
She also urged women and men in the wards to look out for traders who do not use the correct measuring scales, saying they should not hesitate to report such cases to the agency.
Ms Chimboni said this will ensure accuracy and fairness of all measuring equipment and that of actual quantities on the labels of pre-packaged consumer goods.
