ALL was well in Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM) townships, until the Movement for Multi-party Democracy government, under the late president Frederick Chiluba, decided to privatise the mines in the 1990’s.
During the ZCCM days, football teams like Konkola Blades, Nchanga Rangers, Nkana and Wanderers were a force to reckon with. Township roads were very intact with all streets lit at night.
Indeed it was great to live in ZCCM townships.
Today, the story has changed, especially in Mpatamatu in Luanshya where street lights are no more and one wonders if China-Luanshya Mine has any policy on corporate social responsibility.
Since 2009, I have not seen any corporate social responsibility programme by the mine owners here.
