THE constitution is one document fundamental in the development of a country, it is defined as a set of rules or principles by which a country is governed and every country that exists today has one. Just as a constitution is important to countries today, so are values important to people. What then are values? The Concise Oxford English Dictionary defines values as “principles or standards of behaviour; one’s judgement of what is important in life.†We can further elaborate this as moral ideas, general conceptions or orientations towards the world or sometimes simple interests, attitudes, preferences, needs, sentiments, and disposition.
Any achievement that is attained starts with goals been set. Goals are simply aims that one desires to achieve at a particular time in life. When one’s goals and values are not in line they cause mixed emotions. And these conflicts can create difficulties in making the best choices as well as exhaustion. Yet if your goals and values are in line, supporting each other, positive emotions are triggered. This simplifies and clarifies things at the very best. From this we see that achievement comes from a good goal set and that a good goal is one that is consistent with your values.
Generally, values give us direction in the way we live our lives. Without them, we muddle around and let life happen to us. We wander from one thing to another, trying to “find ourselves.†To live intelligently you need values, they will help you;
• Create a clear guideline for your action
• Make good choices
• Feel fulfilled
It is after making clear and good choice of decisions that achievement is attained. Hence, for every achievement we want to attain we need to have values that will direct us. From this we can conclude that without values we will have no purpose and we cannot achieve anything in life.
