VIOLET MENGO, Lusaka
THE Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry is responsible for formulating and administering policies in the commercial and industrial sectors of the country.
It is also responsible for coordinating programmes and activities on trade and industry in order to enhance the sector’s contribution to the socio-economic development of the country.
The ministry was created to effectively promote inclusive growth and competitiveness of industry and commerce through creation of a conducive policy environment, growth of the commercial, trade and industry through job creation.
In the early years after independence, the Ministry of Commerce and Trade was almost synonymous with the Industrial Development Corporation of Zambia (INDECO).
Through INDECO, the government embarked on a number of projects meant to ease the import and export bottlenecks that resulted from the Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) by Ian Smith in Rhodesia in 1965 and the sanctions that followed.http://epaper.daily-mail.co.zm/
