UTH set for more specialised operations – Mwenya

UTH Lusaka.

THE University Teaching Hospital (UTH) is set for more specialised operations next year, public relations manager Mwenya Mulenga says.
Mr Mulenga said the hospital has successfully carried out six heart surgeries this year and still has over 400 patients awaiting similar operations.
He was speaking in an interview in Lusaka yesterday.
“Our mandate as UTH is not to deal with simple cases but specialised ones. We can say 2015 has been successful because we have carried out six heart operations which never used to be done in the past,” he said.
Mr Mulenga said there has been a challenge in carrying out kidney transplants, but that the hospital is working to ensure that all paediatric (children’s) cases are dealt with locally by next year.
He said the hospital has also carried out a number of successful spinal surgeries and has more patients awaiting treatment.
Mr Mulenga said 2015 was a successful year for the hospital because it managed to save the over US$15,000 that was being spent on just one patient to be treated abroad.
He said there is still need for more resources to be put in for the hospital to provide all kinds of surgeries unlike having them done abroad when qualified surgeons are available.
