UPND won’t harass PF civil servants diligent at work – Mweetwa

UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) spokesperson Cornelius Mweetwa says the UPND government is comfortable working with civil servants who are loyal to the Patriotic Front (PF) party so long they do their work diligently. Mr Mweetwa in an interview yesterday said civil servants should however pay allegiance to the Constitution of the country and the mandate of their offices. He was reacting to sentiments made by PF vice-president Given Lubinda, who was quoted in the media as saying some civil servants in the government system are still loyal to his party. “We truly are not a political party that wants to throw our weight around and begin to ask people for political allegiance, no, not at all. “We are only asking civil servants to have allegiance to the Constitution of the country and the mandate of their offices,” he said. Mr Mweetwa said civil servants are Zambians who enjoy the right to association according to Article 20 of the Zambian Constitution. He said the sentiments coming from the PF leadership only put civil servants in an uncomfortable position. “The PF did not understand governance issues and their recent sentiments on civil servants is just a very cheap political statement which should not raise eyebrows. “If it were PF in power, they would have begun a witch-hunt, but there is nothing like civil servants for the opposition,” he said. Mr Mweetwa said all that is required from civil servants is to report for work and execute government programmes. Mr Mweetwa, who is Southern Province minister, said civil servants should CLICK TO READ MORE
