THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has called on Zambians to remain peaceful and united as they celebrate New Year.
UPND secretary-general Winston Chibwe said Zambians should avoid violence and celebrate the festive season in a peaceful manner.
He said in an interview yesterday that Zambia has been known for peace and this has helped the country to attract investment.
“The UPND is wishing the people of Zambia a prosperous New Year. As we celebrate, we should avoid engaging in any form of violence.
“Let us strive by all means to maintain peace and unity that we have been known for in this country. Let us learn to love one another as brothers and sisters,†Mr Chibwe said.
He also said UPND campaigns are progressing well and predicted victory for the party in the January 20, 2015 presidential poll.
Mr Chibwe said UPND president Hakainde Hichilema has continued to deliver the message of more development in the country if elected into office.
“I want to thank the people of Zambia for the support they have continued to give us as the UPND. The attendance in rallies has given us hope that we will carry the day come January 20,†Mr Chibwe said.
He called for issue-based campaigns.
Mr Chibwe said it is important for political leaders contesting the forthcoming presidential election to avoid basing their campaigns on character assassination but on issues that will help to foster national development
Mr Chibwe also called on youths to avoid to be used as mercenaries of political violence during the campaigns.
He called on Zambians to vote for Mr Hichilema to help foster development in the country.
