UPND applauds ECZ

THE United Party for National Development (UPND) has commended the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) for being proactive by engaging stakeholders in trying to find solutions to some flaws in the electoral process.
In a statement released yesterday, UPND spokesperson Charles Kakoma said the importance of free and fair elections in enhancing democracy cannot be over emphasised.
Mr Kakoma said UPND has presented a number of recommendations to the ECZ, ranging from enforcement of the Electoral Code of Conduct, to the selection of elections officers, results tallying, transmission, verification and announcement.
“We have been able to reach common ground on most issues.  Further, we would like to applaud the ECZ for their decision to allow political parties to verify the new voters’ roll and most importantly, to allow independent auditors to also do the verification,” Mr Kakoma said.
He said the dialogue between the ECZ and political parties should continue.
Mr Kakoma said the formation of the inter-party elections committee that was agreed upon at the February 4 consultative meeting is a step in the right direction.
He said progress has been made to lay ground for a free, fair and transparent general election, although a few issues still need to be addressed.
“We are not oblivious to the difficult conditions under which the ECZ is working. The institution is inadequately funded… We would like to make an earnest appeal to the government to make additional resources available to the ECZ immediately. Otherwise, all the good work that the ECZ is doing will go down the drain,” Mr Kakoma said.
