UNZA, CBU payments raise concerns

STEVEN MVULA, Parliament
FAILURE by the University of Zambia (UNZA) and Copperbelt University (CBU) to account for over K208 million in the 2017 financial year contributed to riots and strikes at the two institutions, the Public Accounts Committee has observed.
The monies involved partly included student loans, bursaries, accommodation allowances and book allowances.
The permanent secretary at the Ministry of Higher Education is mandated to ensure accountability at UNZA and CBU.
Public Accounts Committee chairperson Howard Kunda said of the K208,759,724 million unaccounted for, over K202 million, or 97 percent, relates to finances at UNZA and CBU, while only one percent involves procurement, and two percent has to do with the Ministry headquarters.
