Unclaimed bodies worry LCC

UTH Lusaka.

SYLVESTER CHISHIMBA, KAPALA CHISUNKA, Lusaka
THE Lusaka City Council (LCC) has complained about the high cost of burying unclaimed bodies whose number is always on the increase at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary.
LCC public relations manager Habeenzu Mulunda said in an interview that the local authority has in the past been spending a lot of money to carry out the exercise.
“Currently, we have 52 unclaimed bodies lying at the UTH mortuary. Of the 52, 10 have been identified but others remain unclaimed at various hospitals in Lusaka. The bodies have been in the mortuary for five months,” Mr Mulunda said.
“We are concerned because sometimes relatives abandon their loved ones in hospitals to avoid funeral costs in case their sick relatives die. It saddens us to have to refer to the dead as unclaimed bodies when their relatives are there,” he said.
