Tribunal nullifies chairperson’s election

THE Local Government Elections Tribunal has nullified the election of United Party for National Development’s (UPND) Sitali Masiliso as Sikongo district council chairperson for electoral malpractices.
Mr Masiliso’s election was challenged by Patriotic Front (PF) candidate Namuchana Sepiso, who presented 11 grounds of alleged illegal and corrupt practices, which he argued had a bearing on the election results.
Mr Masiliso polled 8, 029 votes while Mr Sepiso got 4,126 votes.
Tribunal member Saviour Nsomboshi said in his judgement that an election can be nullified over a single count of corruption.
Mr Nsomboshi said the tribunal is satisfied that there was an act of corruption committed by Mr Masiliso as submitted by the Petitioners’ witness number two and three, Kapoba Kababu and Mwaka Samutuwa, respectively.
