Timber exporters get respite

MINISTRY of Lands will allow existing holders of export permit to export finished timber products.

Minister of Lands Jean Kapata said those with concession licences will continue operating and supplying timber to the local industry to empower the public and ensure sustainable operations of the business.
Ms Kapata said this in a statement issued yesterday by Ministry of Lands public relations officer Dimiwe Zulu.
“Out of 16 valid export permits, one is expiring on June 26; five will expire next month, eight in September, and two in October. Production and conveyance permits will continue to be issued in accordance with statutory instrument No 50 of 2016,” she said.
Ms Kapata said the ministry will not accept applications for export of timber until the ban is lifted.
Meanwhile, Ms Kapata said government followed laid down procedure to dispose the timber that had been seized.
She said the ministry worked with other government agencies in the disposal of the mukula logs.
Ms Kapata urged the Zambia National Association of Saw Millers to engage the ministry and find solutions to concerns on forestry issues.
