Teenagers: The new crop of farmers

PUPILS at New Mtendere Secondary School tending their garden.

LINDA NYONDO, Lusaka
THIRTEEN-YEAR-OLD Derick Hilundu of New Mtendere Secondary School dreams of becoming a commercial farmer thanks to the agricultural training he has received on soil identification and nurturing of plants.
Derick, who belongs to the Skills Development Club at his school and who has such a passion for farming is already putting his skills into practice at home and school by having some small vegetable gardens.
At such a young age, Derick has engaged in farming, because he realises it is a lucrative venture and can lift households out of poverty thereby improving their livelihoods.
His face lights up as he says, “I have been trained on how to identify good soil, how to take care of it and also how to nurture plants. I am happy with this skill which has now given me confidence to become a farmer when I grow up.”  CLICK TO READ MORE
