Swimmers Rio preps underway – Welting

STEPHEN PHIRI, Brazzaville
NATIONAL swimming team coach Tonia Welting says preparations for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games are underway.
Welting said in an interview on Monday night that four swimmers have been identified to earn qualification for the Brazil finals.
She named the quartet as Jade Howard, who is based in the United States of America, Ralph Goveia, Alexandrios Axiotis and Tilka Paljk.
Axiotis and Paljk are based in South Africa.
Welting said should the four fail to qualify, they will get wild card entries for the Rio de Janeiro finals.
“We have identified two boys and two girls based on performance in the last one to two years. The four will compete to qualify for the Olympic Games,” she said.
Welting, who is also Zambia Amateur Swimming Union registrar, spoke highly of Goveia.
Goveia on Monday cruised to the All- Africa Games 100m butterfly final but finished seventh with 56.38 seconds in the race, won by Chad le Clos of South Africa with 51.24 seconds.
Welting said with time, Goveia will mature into a quality swimmer.
She also urged parents to encourage their children to take up swimming.
Welting said with concerted efforts, the standard of the sport will improve.
