Suspect, 44, attempts to commit suicide in dock

PROCEEDINGS at the Nakonde Magistrate’s Court were yesterday disrupted after a 44-year-old peasant farmer charged with trafficking in 3.2 grammes of cannabis attempted to commit suicide by slicing his throat with a razor in the dock.
This happened while magistrate Joshua Sikazwe was delivering judgment in a case in which Kasonde Simwinga was charged with trafficking in a psychotropic substance.
Zambia News and Information Services reports that Simwinga, of Mukoma village in Chieftainess Waitwika’s area, tried slicing his throat with a razor blade.
Mr Sikazwe committed Simwinga to the High Court for sentencing because he is a second offender after convicting him of a similar offence last year.
While Mr Sikazwe passed judgment, Simwinga who was in accused dock reached for a razor blade and started slicing his throat in an attempt to commit suicide.-ZANIS.
