RB off MDG summit

PRESIDENT Banda leaves for Rwanda today for a one-day Heads of State and Government summit which will discuss the progress made on the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The President will join other African leaders in Kigali at a meeting organised by the Rwandan President Paul Kagame to review progress made by African countries in implementing MDGs.

Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations, Dickson Jere who announced this in a statement yesterday said the leaders will share their countries’ experience ahead of the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly to be held this month in New York.

The UN General Assembly theme will be centered on MDGs.
Mr Jere said since Zambian became a signatory to the Millennium Declaration, the country has put in place a number of development frameworks to support the realisation of MDGs. These include the Poverty Reduction Strategy Paper, Transitional National Development Plan, the Vision 2030 and the Fifth National Development Plan, which are aimed at accelerating the attainment of MDGs by 2015.

He said after the summit, President Banda will join other African Heads of State and Government tomorrow at an inauguration ceremony of President Kagame who was recently re-elected President of the Republic of Rwanda.

Mr Banda has been invited to attend the inauguration of Mr Kagame in his capacity as Zambian President as well as Chairman of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR).
Rwanda is one of the key members of the ICGLR.
