6 die in road accident

SIX people died on the spot and 11 others sustained serious injuries yesterday after a minibus on which they were travelling in collided with a truck.

The accident occurred around 07:35hours on the Kitwe-Chingola road near Zaffico timber plantation.

The accident happened when the driver of a Dyna Canter truck belonging to Northern Breweries, ferrying Chibuku opaque beer from Kitwe to Chingola, allegedly tried to overtake another vehcile.

A Sunday Mail crew that rushed to the scene of accident found police removing bodies that were trapped in the minibus.

One of the victims who was on the bus, Nicholas Banda, said that they were coming from Chambeshi and that the driver of the bus who was speeding refused to heed the pleas of the passengers that he reduces speed.

The driver of the bus is among those seriously injured while that for the trunk sustained minor injuries.

Kitwe police Chief Dobson Siame said that the death tool could rise becaue some of the injured passengers were in a critical condition.

The victims were rushed to Kitwe central hospital where they are receiving treatment. 

The Police have since instituted investigations in the cause of accident.
In Siavonga, Police have retrieved two bodies from the lower Zambezi River.

The two bodies are said to be those of fishermen who reportedly went fishing in canoes early this week in seperate incidents.

District Commissioner Emily Striedl confirmed the retrieval of the two bodies in an interview with Zambia News and Information Services in Siavonga yesterday.
