Buffaloes dig in, out to bury Nkana

STEPHEN PHIRI reports:

NKANA are today faced with what could probably be their last chance to escape relegation when they come up against Green Buffaloes, an opponent they would have sidestepped if they had a choice.

After yesterday’s week 25 games in the Midlands, which left the Super Division table unshaken at the top, Buffaloes will want to beat Nkana and keep their dream of winning the 2004 alive, remotely though.

Ten years ago, it would have been obvious that Nkana would beat Buffaloes by a cricket scoreline but at the moment, the two teams have swapped fortunes and the Wusakile outfit face the demise of demotion.

Buffaloes look set to hurt Nkana and move a step further in their quest to qualify either for the African Champions League or the Confederations Cup.

Buffaloes’ coach George Lwandamina will rely on Dudley Fichite, Noel Mwandila, Jimmy Mumba, Felix Chepeshi and Clive Hachilensa for the three points.

But Nkana, lying second from the bottom with 19 points are capable of causing and upset and former internationals, Frazer Kamwandi, Boston Mwanza, Musole Sakulanda, Kennedy Mubanga and Aston Mbewe will lead the young players in taking on Buffaloes punch for punch and put the race for beating relegation on track.

Buffaloes are on 33 points, 16 behind leaders Red Arrows.

RANGERS Vs POWER

After being booted out of the Mosi by Division One (North) Roan United last Sunday, Nchanga Rangers will be in a no nonsense mood when they lie in wait for Power Dynamos in a game that could go either way.

Rangers, who also bade farewell to the Coca-Cola at the hands of another Division One (North) side Lime Hotspurs, will do everything possible to carry the day and prove to their fans that their poor run in the two prestigious championships was one of those things in football.

But playing Power who boast of the likes of international defenders Billy Mwanza and Stephen Kunda, John Munkonje, Abraham Mwamba, Norman Munthali and Chisi Mbewe, Rangers players led by skipper Modesto Mwamba should be alert all the time if they are to avoid embarrassment on home turf.

Rangers acting coach, Bruce Mwape, and his assistant Peter Mwanza, who are sitting on a time bomb after being given an ultimatum to win eight of the remaining 10 games or face the chop, will instruct Lawrence Milanzi, Mervin Chipampe, Mwamba and Agrippa Mbewe to utilise the scoring opportunities they create.

The game looks a balanced affair. Power has 33 points while Rangers are a point behind.

In other matches, Zesco United play Chambishi Blackburn while Kitwe United welcome Konkola Blades at Garden Park Stadium.
