SUDANESE ambassador to Zambia Mohammed Isa Edam has commended the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) for having hosted his countryâ€™s national team for Sundayâ€™s international friendly which inaugurated Lusakaâ€™s National Heroes Stadium.
Zambia beat Sudan 3-1.
Edam said Sudan was honoured to have been selected ahead of all countries in Africa to inaugurate the facility, also earmarked to host the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.
â€œWe cherish this relationship between the two national teams and [soccer] federations. This is a very good way to cement this bilateral relationship,â€ he said.
The ambassador said apart from exposing the players of the two national teams, the friendly match also inaugurated the stadium and preparations for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
He said Sudan was particularly delighted to be associated with Zambiaâ€™s jubilee celebrations this year.
Edam congratulated Zambia for building the National Heroes Stadium which he said is critical to infrastructure development Zambia and Africa need for development.
He hailed Zambiaâ€™s leading role in the liberation struggle in Africa and the peace the country has continued to enjoy over the years.
Edam, who also doubles as ambassador to Malawi as well as the permanent representative to the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa, also expressed gratitude to Zambians for the warm welcome they accorded the Sudan national team.
Addressing the Sudan national team at his residence on the eve of the match against the Chipolopolo, Edam encouraged the players to always live to the spirit of fair play.
